Ever since I was 15 I knew I wanted at least two tattoos – (one for each of my parents). However, I told myself that I had to wait at least 3 years before I would go through with it. This is because at the time – working at Hot Topic and rockin’ a nose ring I figured it might just be a “phase”.
I thank my 15 year old self for this – even though I did end up going through with it I’m glad I waited to ensure I was making the right choice. Although it was always in the back of my mind I actually ended up getting my first tattoo on a whim, at the age of 21 on Mom’s Weekend for my sorority.
I thought what better time than when my mom was with me and she could experience it too – I felt that would make the tattoo even more meaningful. (If you guys haven’t noticed yet I’m a sucker for anything cliché and down right cheesy so this was perfect). We went in, it took about 25 minutes total (it took longer to create the tattoo than it did to actually get the tattoo) and just like that I was inked FOREVER.
I decided to go with a meaning that was special to my mom and I – I wanted to always have a constant reminder of the loving bond I shared with my momma. For as far back as I can remember whenever my mom and I would say I love you – we would always add “way past heaven”. It was just our thing, however I knew that I didn’t want that whole phrase written out because I’ve always been a sucker for the soft subtle tattoos. So I shortened it to “WPH” – and ever since we’ve said “I love you WPH!” – even my phone auto corrects it to WPH (that makes it real).
There isn’t a day that goes by that I don’t look down at my wrist and smile – I always have my mom right there with me and for me that’s what a tattoo is really about. Some people think the small wrist tattoos are overdone but I say screw em’ – it’s your body and you can do what you please. However, if you’re thinking about getting a tattoo I do suggest really thinking about it – there is even a website (Momentary Ink) that will allow you to create what you want, send you a temporary one and allow you see what it would be like to have a tattoo (how cool is that?!)!
I think that tattoos can really be a way to express yourself – I chose one that still makes me happy to this day! For any of you local KC humans I went to Irezumi and would go back in a heartbeat for many reasons. So, on a serious note you always want to make sure that you’re going to a safe/clean tattoo parlor and for anyone in this area I would 100% recommend Irezumi – it’s super clean and the artists are absolutely amazing!
Although this isn’t necessarily a post for everyone I do hope you humans enjoyed getting to know me a little better. I think it’s super important as a blogger to show your followers you as a human and not just someone sitting behind a computer. In allowing y’all into our world our only hope is that you can use it to make your world just a little bit better. Alright, I’m off my soapbox but really, if you have any questions or comments or are thinking about getting a tattoo I’d love to chat!
