Protein Bar Roundup

Protein bars are a hot commodity when it comes to the latest and greatest in the health and wellness game. It seems like every single time I wander over to the protein bar section of Hyvee or Whole Foods, there’s something I’ve never seen before. Protein bars are a staple in my diet not only because of their convenience, but because they’re a sure fire way to curb my sweet tooth while eating 15-20 grams of protein – a definite win win for me. There are so many different bars out there, so I figured it might be helpful for you to see the bars that I buy, and just a little bit about each one and why I buy it.

Choosing a protein bar can be hard because of the sheer number bars that are on the market. You could easily go through 20 different ones before you actually find something you like! And I probably have at this point, which goes to show how great these bars are below! I’ve narrowed my favorites down to three staple protein bars that I’ve continued to buy for months now. I’ve chosen these protein bars based on a couple of different factors – taste (obviously), ingredients, its macro “make up”, and what I’m needing the bar for. So, here are my faves!

Perfect Bar

  • Macros: 15-20g fat, 20-25 carbs, 12-18g protein
  • What I eat them for:
    •  I eat these as a pre workout snack. They’re made with organic honey which is a complex carb, meaning you’re sure to be energized quickly!
  • Pros:
    • They are considered to be the “freshest protein bar ever created”! You are actually supposed to keep these in the refrigerator because of how fresh the ingredients are.
    • The ingredients are phenomenal, I can read and pronounce every single one! They’re also low on the glycemic index because they’re made with organic honey and dates, which is great if you’re watching your sugar intake.
    • I have yet to find one of these bars that I did not like. Believe me when I say they literally melt in your mouth! They’re absolutely to die for – they taste unlike any other protein bar I’ve ever had, and I recommend them to every single person I know!
  • Cons:
    • These bars are pretty high in fat content so I definitely have to kind of plan my macros around eating one of these bad boys.
    • They’re supposed to be refrigerated, so they’re not always the best for travel or to throw in a gym bag!
  • Where to buy: The Perfect Bar, Whole Foods, Sprouts
  • My favorite flavors:
    • Dark Chocolate Almond
    • Coconut Peanut Butter
    • Cranberry Crunch
    • Almond Coconut

Probar Base Bars

  • Macros: 9g fat, 32g carbs, 21g protein
  • What I eat them for:
    • These bars are a great post workout snack because they have a ton of protein!
    • I also love these bars for when I’m on the go or traveling and need some extra protein when I have limited access (ie: for breakfast, snacks, etc).
  • Pros:
    • These bars are unique because they have both a crunchy and a soft layer, unlike most other protein bars that are completely soft. The crunchy layer is more crispy like a crunch bar, and the soft part is like a nougat. An amazing combo if you ask me!
    • These bars a little bit more protein compared to the other two bars in this post, which is always something I look for in a post workout bar.
    • These are made with soy protein – a great option for those of you who have an intolerance to whey protein!
  • Cons:
    • These are definitely not organic and they do have some ingredients that I can’t pronounce, which tends to happen with bars that have a higher protein content. However, I don’t eat these bars every single day, so this really doesn’t bother me. Everything in moderation!
  • Where to buy: Probar Base Bars, Whole Foods, Sprouts
  • My favorite flavors:
    • Cookie Dough
    • Frosted Coconut
    • Mint Chocolate

I also have to give a special shout out to Pro Bar, because of their customer service. Pro bar sent me a box of their base bars to try, and unfortunately someone in our apartment complex decided to get into the box and take almost every bar (just goes to show how popular they are!). I emailed them to let them know, and they more than willingly sent an entire new box as well as a box of their nut butter, no questions asked. Customer service seems to be something that’s extremely hard to come by these days, so this meant everything to me, go Pro Bar!

Go Macro Bar

  • Macros: 11g fat, 37g carbs, 11g protein
  • What I eat them for:
    • These bars are pretty high in carbs, so they’re great for a pre workout snack!
  • Pros:
    • The ingredients in this bar are amazing and they’re completely organic. Even better is that there is absolutely no refined sugar or salt.
    • They’re made with a plant-based protein blend! They’re the only protein bars that I know of made with this type of protein. If whey proteins bother you, you should definitely give these a try!
  • Cons:
    • Some people may find these bars to not quite be sweet enough for their taste, but that’s one of the things I like about them! They have a natural sweetness, but it’s not too overpowering!
    • These bars are pretty high in carbs, so if you’re on a more low carb diet, these probably aren’t going to be the best option for you!
  • Where to buy: Go Macro Bars (Enter Macro30 at checkout for 30% off right now!), Whole Foods, Sprouts
  • My favorite flavors:
    • Everlasting Joy
    • Protein Pleasure
